Newly-wed and just arrived in Dubai I was filled with hope and excitement as I began a new life in the sunshine.
But my honeymoon period came to a crashing halt when I received a stamp in my passport that read 'wife - not permitted to work'.
One evening my husband returned home to find me in a heap of helplessness on the hall floor. In floods of tears I had ripped that day's copy of Gulf News to shreds in despair. My mood plummeted as I headed for the 'big dipper' of frustration, denial and rejection. A rollercoaster ride had begun.
But when I turned to my love of writing I found it saved my life, literally – through journaling, journalism, writing books and poetry. I opened my mind and learned how to work without breaking the rules. Five countries, 20 years, 25 books and two sons later, I remain convinced that if a career is to be portable and sustainable it must be based on your passion.
Today, my work allows me to inspire others to do the same. I write, coach, teach, speak and help people fulfil their dreams of publishing and portable careers.
Life and work are fun on the expat rollercoaster. It's where I live and where I work. Take a look at my books, CDs, courses and reports. Read my blog and articles. Listen to my interviews or watch me give a keynote speech. Attend a workshop or invite me to tailormake one especially for you. Join my writers' mentoring program or book me to give a talk or seminar to your members, delegates or colleagues. Pick up some free gifts and sign up to my newsletter, The Inspirer. I am here to help.
